Salisbury Steak

Some recipes sound intimidating to make, especially as a busy single mom. Salisbury Steak is one of them. Let me tell you, this recipe is just as easy as making hamburgers.

When I first made it, I was dreading it looking up a recipe. My dad had been craving it, so I thought I would give it a try. My parents were supposed to take Remy with them to visit my Tia (aunt). I thought to myself, “perfect! I can tackle this recipe while they are gone!” Ha. That was a short lived thought. She called to say she got a last minute invite to the casino, but they should come. One thing about my parents, you invite them to a casino, and they are gone. So my relaxing alone time turned into cooking alone with Remy. I was ready to say “spaghetti night it is”, but decided to check out a few recipes first.

I sure felt silly when I saw how easy the steps were! It was going to be a mommy and me cooking night! Remy grabbed her apron, and I grabbed mine and we got to cooking!

The ingredients can seem intense, but they really aren’t. First you will throw together the patty by mixing together your ground beef and seasonings. I let Remy help mix this with her clean hands. We make sure to thoroughly wash her hands after. Mom tip: slice your onion into rings, it makes it easier to pull them off the dish if your child doesn’t like them. Mix together Gravy ingredients, and set aside. This step your child can help with- dip your patties into the cornstarch or flour on both sides, dusting off most of the excess. This will help your gravy get thick later. Preheat a large skillet and add your patties. Once cooked, remove from the skillet and add onions and mushrooms. Cook them down until they are soft, and return patties to the skillet. Cover with gravy mix and simmer.

Serve with mashed potatoes and veggies!

Here is what you need:

Patty Ingredients:

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • ⅓ cup bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire
  • 1 Packet of Lipton Onion Soup Mix
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch or flour

Gravy Ingredients:

  • 2 packets Brown Gravy Mix
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire
  • 1 Onion, sliced in rings
  • 1 pack  pre cut mushrooms of your choice (optional)

Step 1: Your child can help mix with their hands depending on their age. In a large bowl using your hands, mix together ground beef, bread crumbs, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire, and onion soup mix. Form into flat oval shaped patties.

Step 2: Heat a large skillet. I typically don’t add oil when using ground beef since it renders a lot of fat. Add your patties and cook until golden on both sides. (Because you are adding them back to the pan with the gravy you don’t need to cook it completely at this time)

Step 3: Remove patties from pan, but leave drippings. Slice onions into rings, and toss in your cornstarch or flour. Remove excess flour, and throw into the skillet with sliced mushrooms (optional).

Step 4: While they are cooking, mix together packets of gravy, hot water, ketchup, and Worcestershire.

Step 5:  Once cooked down, add patties back to the skillet and cover with gravy mixture. Cook for 5-10 more minutes until the gravy is thick and the meat is fully cooked.

Serve with mashed potatoes and veggies and enjoy!
